Market Nutrition Programs

We believe good nutrition is important for everyone and that locally-grown and raised products should be accessible for all. Shopping at the farmers market is a great way to find fresh, nutritious foods while supporting and connecting with your local farmers and food producers.

The Menomonie Farmers Market proudly participates in the FoodShare (EBT) and Senior/WIC Farmers' Market Nutrition (FMNP) programs.

We also offer a Market Match program that offers FoodShare shoppers a dollar-for-dollar match, up to $10 per market day funded by local sponsorships and grants.

What is FoodShare?

FoodShare is Wisconsin’s administration of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the federal program formerly known as food stamps. FoodShare participants have a Quest card, also known as an EBT card (Electronic Benefits Transfer) that works similarly to a debit card. The Menomonie Farmers Market has a card reader at the Market Manager's Booth, in the center of the pavilion, that can process an EBT transaction in exchange for market tokens for use on any eligible SNAP products being sold at the market.

How do I use my benefits?

1. Visit the Market Information booth during market hours and let the staff know you want to use your Quest or P-EBT card to make an EBT transaction.

2. Decide how much you would like to withdraw from your account to spend at the market. The staff member will swipe your EBT card on the reader and ask you to enter your pin. You will be given green plastic tokens worth $1 each in exchange. Market tokens don't expire, but you can't exchange them for cash.

You can keep the tokens to use on a future trip to the market or benefits can be refunded to your card on the same day they were purchased by stopping at the Market Information booth.

3. Use the green market tokens with any Menomonie Farmers Market vendor that sells SNAP eligible products - bakery, fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, dairy products, edible plant seedlings, pickles, jams, and more. Tokens cannot be used to buy nonfood items (like flowers or crafts) or hot foods (like those served at food tents/trucks). At the end of the market, the vendors turn in the tokens to market staff for payment.

What is the Market Match program?

Our Market Match program increases access to healthy, local food for any customer using their FoodShare/SNAP benefits at the farmers market. The program provides a one-to-one match of FoodShare token purchases, up to $10 per market day. That means, when you spends $10 of your FoodShare benefit at the farmers market, you'll receive an extra $10 in tokens, to spend on local food at the market. More money to shop means more food on the table and it also leads to greater revenue for our local farmers selling at the market!

Who pays for the Market Match program?

The Market Match program is paid for and supported by businesses and individuals in our local community. Through grants, donations, and sponsorships, this generous group is making it easier for low-income individuals and families to put food on the table and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Without them the Market Match would not be possible. If you are interested in supporting the program, you can learn more here

Market Match

If you have Menomonie Farmers Market wooden tokens from past years, please bring them to the Market Manager's booth to exchange them for the green plastic tokens prior to shopping.

Please note that we can not honor tokens purchased at other farmers markets. Each market is operated independently and the funds from your SNAP account are deposited into the Menomonie Farmers Market account when we provide you with tokens.  â€‹â€‹â€‹

The Menomonie Farmers Market has over 40 vendors offering SNAP-eligible items, making farmers market tokens a great way to support locally owned businesses while shopping for fresh produce and artisanal food items!

What is the Farmers' Market Nutrition Program?

The WIC (Women Infant and Children) and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Programs offer one-time food benefits to eligible participants each year. Each eligible participant receives checks that are redeemed at local farmers' markets June through October on fresh fruits, vegetables and fresh cut herbs. This program is separate from Foodshare, and checks can be redeemed directly at eligible vendors.

Not all vendors at the Menomonie Farmers Market accept FMNP checks. Vendors that do accept FMNP checks will have a yellow sign displayed at their market stall. For more information on Senior and WIC Farmers Market Nutrition programs click here.
